Walker & Hall English 1904 Sterling Silver Centerpiece Bowl in Art Nouveau Style

Walker & Hall sterling silver centerpiece bowl from 1904, made in Sheffield, England. This hexagonal-shaped bowl stands on three curvilinear legs, has three handles with applied motifs which are characteristic of the Art Nouveau style, and a dedicatory inscription to Major W. R. Carey, which shows that the bowl was given to him in 1915 by the Officers of the 16th Middlesex Regiment. It measures 11 1/2'' from handle to handle by 5 1/2'' in height, weighs 40.6 ozt, and bears hallmarks as shown.
Walker & Hall was an important English silversmith. The business was established in Sheffield in 1845 by George Walker. The business was joined by Henry Hall and became in 1853 Walker & Hall. The factory was at Howard Street, Sheffield, while showrooms were opened in 45 Holborn Viaduct, London. Branches were opened in Liverpool, Manchester, Leeds, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Newcastle, Cardiff, Belfast, Hull, Bristol, Melbourne and Adelaide (Australia), Cape Town (South Africa), Wellington (1911) and Auckland (1914) in New Zealand. Walker & Hall combined in 1963 under the British Silverware Ltd with Mappin & Webb and Elkington & Co, two very prestigious makers.
