    Description

SCARCE ITEM!! RARE IN HARD COVER!! VINTAGE 1965!!
This is USGS Professional Paper 490,
Geology of the Flaming Gorge Area, Utah-Colorado-Wyoming.
Published in 1965, this is a scarce and interesting work. This nice item consists of the 196-page
    hard cover book
    and all
    three of the pocket plates,
plus many photos of geologic features. One of the plates is a large full color geology map of the region over four feet wide. There is also a nice shaded relief map and  stratigraphic correlation diagram.
The whole thing is almost an inch thick!
This area is loved for its amazing scenery along the Green river. The area is renowned for the varied geology and scenery with cliffs, mountains, gorges and plains all juxtaposed. Major Powell made one of the early explorations of the area.
All the rock units are described and they range from Precambrian to Recent. The earliest rocks are the Red Cliff quartzite which has been folded, faulted, and intruded by various igneous rocks. It contains schist and amphibolite as well as other rock types. Younger rocks consists of sequences of varying age and composition, mostly sedimentary. The area is at the NE corner of Utah with a bit in Colorado and a sliver in Wyoming.
This is a great book to tell you all about the whole area. It's a great old book. These were issued with soft covers but this was rebound by a mining company and is remarkably well preserved. You won't see another like it come along.
