  • Condition: From a time when the USGS used the worst acidic paper for the covers. The best thing that could be done was to rebind these before the damage affected the text. Such is the case here. This was either rebound, or reinforced very neatly with tape. So the front is the title page. It is actually almost the best one of these I have ever seen. Minor foxing. Small tape on front. Slight soiling of text block edges. Mininmal corner bumping. No internal marks. Maps and photo plates are excellent. A very good example of this old report. Fist and last pictures show front and back.

    Description

    ONLY ONE AVAILABLE!!
This is USGS Professional Paper 3,
The Geology and Petrography of Crater Lake National Park.
Published in 1903, this is a rare item, and for good reason.  This 167-page book discusses one of the most beautiful places in the US. Filled with interesting vintage photos and a beautiful full color map, this is one of the best reports the USGS did. There had never been a complete study of the geology of the area so this report covered it all.
You probably know that Crater Lake formed by the collapse of the Mount Mazama volcano when a caldera formed following a huge eruption. That happened about 7000 years ago, and the products of that eruption, pumice and ash, still blanket the region for many miles around. But the most beautiful feature, Crater Lake itself, is a stunning sight to behold. If you have never been there you should try to get there. It is pretty incredible.
This report has two sections. The first is 61 pages and discusses the general geology including the landforms, lava flows of the mountain, and aspects of the lake. This part has photos of the area and some of the ket features, many of which I've provided above. The second section discusses the various rock types in detail with microscope photos and drawings.
The color map in the first section is really nice, with vintage coloring that just looks great. Overall this is a classic work. If you have been there and love the place what better book to have than this! You'll have hours and years of enjoyment from this rare vintage work. It is only the third Professional Paper ever published by the USGS, and the only one of these I have ever had. All maps are part of the text. There were never any pocket maps with this report.
Please read the condition notes. This is in very good condition but has some condition issues you should be aware of.
